This morning I woke up bright and early to run the final Fenton Payne and Fred 5K. I was sad to learn that this is going to be its final year. For me, this race is very sentimental. Five years ago it was my first race, and I have run it every year since. It was the hardest thing I had ever done at the time and I think crossing that finish line changed my life forever.
After finishing the race 5 years ago with a time of 47:32…Oh, and did I mention I work cotton socks? Rookie fail!
I was planning on pushing myself since I have been doing so much speed work, so I started the morning off with my breakfast of champions, toast with Sunbutter.
The race started and I began running 2:1 intervals, feeling pretty strong the first mile. During mile 2, I started to fade a little but pushed through mile 3, kicking hard to the finish line for a new PR!
Mile 1 – 12:01
Mile 2 – 12:18
Mile 3 – 11:42
New PR – 37:32 (official time)
I am sad to see this one go but there are many new races on the horizon.
Do you have memories of your first race?
