First of all, let me start by saying, I am receiving nothing from The Hot Chocolate run for this post.  They don’t even know who the heck I am!  This was a totally awesome and well run race and I think everyone should know about it!

The morning of the race it was freezing!  I don’t rember the exact temperature but I do know that I was wearing two pairs of tights, three shirts, a wind breaker, wool socks, two pair of gloves, a hat, an ear warmer, a buff, and I was still freezing!

You are assigned a corral for the start of the race based on your pace.  Now, I know that this happens in lots of races, but the Hot Chocolate race crew were actually checking bibs to make sure runners didn’t end up in the wrong corral.  When a runner from corral E tried to get into corral B they were very politely directed to the proper corral.

The race started on time, you didn’t have to weave in and out of slower runners (because the corrals were so well policed), and even the volunteers who were working the water stops were being very careful not to have any spills (since the water would instantly turn into ice) and can I just say, anyone who volunteers to work a water station while the temperature is in the teens is a saint in my book!  Because of the temperature, there were several icy patches along the race course but the race officials had gone through before the start and marked each and every one with orange pylon cones.

The finisher mug line was run even more smoothly than the start.  The entire finsher mug tent was fenced off and runners waited in mini corrals to go through the line.  Once you reached the front, you traded your bib tag for a finsher mug (pre-filled with goodies) and went back out the other side of the corral.  Runners were not allowed in the tent at all.  I think this is a great thing!  I am now a back of the middle of the pack runner but I started at the back of the pack and I can recall many times that by the time I reached the finish line and  made it over to the area where all of the chocolate milk, bagles, etc. were located, they were all gone because some of the faster runners took more than one…I still get irritated when I see people take more than one chocolate milk when I know there are still runners out on the course….but now I digress.

and of course, breakfast with the girls after the run:
